Michael Beasley Scores Career High vs Grizzlies 19-02-10 [30 Points / Complete Highlights]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (NBA.com exclusive) — Dwyane Wade passed his walking boot from teammate to teammate in the Heat locker room at FedExForum on Friday night. Udonis Haslem signed his name, then Rafer Alston and so on down the line, each man using a black Sharpie on Wade’s keepsake.

Michael Beasley was one of the last teammates to emerge from the shower, and he never noticed Wade when he tried to hand him the boot.

“He broke his career high,” Quentin Richardson said, “so he don’t want to sign it!”

It was all in good fun for the Heat, whose 100-87 double-overtime victory over the Grizzlies was the product of some unexpected but much-needed individual performances. Miami (29-27) extended its winning streak to a season-best five games.

“Whether you’re up in the game or down, and whether it’s regulation or overtime, you have to have some mental toughness to stay in the moment,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “And I thought we did a very good job of doing that. I don’t even know where to begin with the guys.”

Why not start with Beasley? With Wade sidelined with a left calf strain, the second-year forward busted loose for a career-high 30 points on 13-of-25 shooting and eight rebounds, dominating Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies’ All-Star forward, for long stretches.

Beasley, often criticized for not playing to his potential, was as quiet during the pre-game chalk talk as Spoelstra could recall. Spoelstra joked that he would have to show Beasley the film of the session so he could replicate it before the Heat visits the Mavericks on Saturday.

“I like seeing that progress,” Spoelstra said. “He’s the 11th youngest player in the league and everyone expects it to happen right now. But there’s a growth process. And he knows that with Dwayne out, there’s going to be more opportunities. His body language out there is great.”

Beasley got help from another unlikely source. Mario Chalmers, who had missed the last nine games with a thumb injury, played 41 minutes off the bench and finished with 18 points (4-of-7 from 3-point range), seven rebounds and four assists.

“I was feeling good,” Chalmers said. “I got some shots up before the game, so it was just a good feeling.

And then there was Haslem, who had two points through regulation and the first overtime. In the second overtime, with Jermaine O’Neal fouled out, Haslem had eight points as Miami outscored Memphis, 15-2.

“I spent some time on the bench observing the game,” he said. “And when I got in, I knew exactly what I needed to bring. I just tried to be aggressive.”

It was a heartbreaker for Memphis (27-27), which is slipping from the highly competitive Western Conference playoff picture.

The Grizzlies had held a morning press conference to introduce Ronnie Brewer, a versatile wing acquired at the trade deadline from the Utah Jazz, and he was expected to give the Grizzlies’ thin bench some pop. Instead, he went down early in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. He left for the locker room in a wheelchair and is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday morning. His status is unknown.

But despite his injury and despite missing 21 of their first 25 shots, the Grizzlies hung around and actually took their first lead with 34.4 seconds left in regulation on a floater in the lane from point guard Mike Conley. Beasley answered with a mid-range jumper that tied things at 76 with 23.8 seconds left, then the Grizzlies’ Rudy Gay (15 points, 6-of-19 shooting) and O’Neal (18 points) missed potential game-winners.

And after the Grizzlies’ O.J. Mayo (17 points) buried a 3-pointer in the right corner to push the Grizzlies ahead 85-83 late in overtime, Chalmers nailed a runner off the glass that sent the game to a second overtime, which the Heat dominated.

“I think we just ran out of gas,” said Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, who finished with a team-high 22 points. “We didn’t do a great job of attacking or finding the open shots. And they got easy shots with Haslem in the game.”

Spoelstra said he was pleased with Beasley’s development, in particular. His performance featured a nice mix of post moves and mid-range jumpers, and it was clear that Beasley approached the game with something to prove. He indicated that he has been frustrated with all the criticism, including some offered by Charles Barkley, who earlier this season referred to Wade’s supporting cast as a bunch of “Tito Jacksons.”

“It kind of shuts everyone up,” Beasley said. “It don’t stop here, but this is the kind of win that feels good for everybody. And ask Charles Barkley if he knows my name. Kept calling us ‘Tito.’ I think we’re just trying to show that we do have names.”

Allen Iverson 32pts 12asts clutch FT vs Grizzlies NBA 07/08

Trailing by seven points with 3:12 left, the Denver Nuggets didn’t panic. They made veteran plays.

The Memphis Grizzlies were hurt by their youth.

Allen Iverson had 32 points and 12 assists Wednesday night, and the Nuggets used a late run to beat the Grizzlies 106-102.

“This was a big win for us at somebody else’s home,” Iverson said. “Down seven points with 3 minutes to go. It was a gut check for us. I think a game like this is going to help us down the road.”

Elias Says

Allen Iverson posted his own kind of triple double on Wednesday, leading the Nuggets to a win over Memphis by shooting 11-of-26 from the floor, 10-of-12 from the line and adding 12 assists. It was only the fourth regulation (non-overtime) game in the NBA this season in which a player had double-digit field goals, free throws and assists. Iverson also did it on Dec. 6, as did Joe Johnson (Nov. 14) and Dwyane Wade (Dec. 7).

Memphis had built its lead with a 6-0 run after Rudy Gay’s 11-footer with 3:12 left, before Denver answered with a 12-0 spurt to seize control.

Iverson made all six of his free throws in the final 23.2 seconds, helping the Nuggets snap a six-game road losing streak that included losses at Dallas and New Orleans at the start of the three-game road trip.

“It was definitely important,” Denver center Marcus Camby said. “We got our butts kicked the other night down in New Orleans against a great team. We wanted to salvage the rest of this three-game road trip.

“We had to stop the losing streak.”

Anthony Carter finished with 18 points, five during the decisive rally, while Linas Kleiza added 15 for the Nuggets. Camby had 13 points and 19 rebounds.

Gay led Memphis with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Mike Miller contributed 22 points. Kyle Lowry scored 19 and Darko Milicic finished with 14 points and matched his career high with 16 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost four of five.

“It’s the same story as before,” Milicic said. “[We] just can’t find ways to win.”

Both teams were short-handed. The Nuggets were without Carmelo Anthony, the league’s fourth-leading scorer, who missed his fifth game with a left ankle sprain. That, and previous injuries to guard Chucky Atkins and forward Nene, left Denver with 10 players dressed.

Memphis had one less because of injuries to guard Mike Conley and Pau Gasol, the team’s second-leading scorer and leading rebounder. Also, forward Stromile Swift was suspended for the game after an exchange with Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni in Monday’s loss to Dallas.

Denver’s rally came from missed shots and a pair of turnovers from the Grizzlies. Camby blocked his fifth shot of the night during the stretch, and the Nuggets used their defense to turn the game.

“Unfortunately, we were our own worst enemies with the turnovers once again and not getting back well against a very, very good fast-break team,” Iavaroni said.

While Memphis held a 51-39 advantage on the boards, Denver dominated the paint 60-40.

Iverson did everything possible to carry the Nuggets in the first half, scoring 21 points and handing out seven assists as Denver took a 54-52 lead into the locker room.

Denver committed seven turnovers in the opening quarter, and neither team seemed to be in a rhythm offensively. Memphis missed nine of 10 3-point attempts in the half and both teams had nine turnovers at the break.

There was poor ballhandling, wayward passes and mouthing about calls and no-calls.

At one point in the second quarter, Iverson opted out of a breakaway layup for a pass to J.R. Smith, who blew a reverse dunk. The next time down the floor, Smith misfired on a second slam, which Miller converted into a 20-foot jumper.

The Nuggets picked up their shooting touch in the second quarter and erased an early 11-point Memphis lead. They finished the night shooting 51 percent.

The teams stayed close in the second half, including a handful of ties in the third quarter. Miller scored eight points in the first 3 minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Iverson missed all seven of his shots, and Memphis carried a 78-73 lead into the final quarter.

“I got real good shots in the second half. The same shots I got in the first half,” Iverson said. “I just went ice cold.”

Camby said the difference in the final rally was converting on offense.

“We just knew if we kept being aggressive, shots were going to fall,” Camby said. “Guys were missing a lot of easy shots throughout the ballgame that they normally make.

“We just knew we needed to get a consecutive streak of defensive stops in order for us to take the lead.”

Dwyane Wade Top 10 Plays of the 05 06 NBA Season

By the 200506 season Wade had developed into one of the most prominent players in the NBA and was elected to his second All-Star Game. In the 2006 NBA All-Star Game, Wade made the game winning put-back off of the Philadelphia 76ers’ Allen Iverson’s missed shot, to lead the East to a 122120 victory over the West. He scored 20 points on 9/11 field goals in 30 minutes of play. He finished the 200506 regular season averaging 27.2 points, 6.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.95 steals per game.

Against the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 2006 NBA Playoffs, Wade shook off a few injuries that scared Heat fans, including a severely bruised hip in Game 5.[20] Returning late in the half, Wade resurrected his team by scoring 15 of his 28 points while suffering from intense pain, leading the Heat to the much-needed 32 series lead. After this, Wade successfully led his team to the 2006 NBA Finals, despite suffering from flu-like symptoms in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons. He put up a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists in that game, including an 8-point flurry to close out the third quarter that put the game out of reach.

Allen Iverson NBA Draft Highlight 1996-1997 No. 1 Pick

NBA Draft Night Highlight of AI

At 6 feet tall and 165 pounds (maybe), Allen Iverson was the smallest first-overall draft pick in the history of the National Basketball Association. Everyone wanted to know if he could survive in NBA’s land of big men. By the end of his debut season, he had set records and earned awards such as NBA Rookie of the Year. Allen proved that not only could he survive in the NBA, but that he could come out on top as well.

Although he has been criticized for his “bad boy” image, Allen has been working to overcome that without severing his ties to his past and who he is. Controversy? It follows Allen. But, no one can debate the contribution he has made to the NBA.
