The Sixers raced through the regular season, finishing with a league-best 65-17 record. Heading into the Finals, Malone was asked for his prediction and responded with the classic “Fo’, fo’ fo’.” Philadelphia came close to living up to Malone’s prediction of an unblemished playoff record, sweeping New York, beating Milwaukee 4-1 and then sweeping a Los Angeles Lakers team weakened by injuries to Norm Nixon and Bob McAdoo in the NBA Finals. Philadelphia’s 12-1 playoff record is the best in NBA history, and an amended version of Malone’s prediction was engraved on the players’ championship rings: “Fo’, five, fo’.”

LAKERS OWN sixers
LAKERS OWN sixers
The Sixers went …
The Sixers went back to the old color scheme, but the uniforms aren’t exactly the same. Plus they play in the F.U. Center, not the Spectrum. Unfortunately the team is not that good, and Lou Williams & Sami D. are jokes. Brand is an injury prune and is Iggy is a “6-man who starts”.
Andrew Tony was a great 2-guard, and could shoot. But, what made him great, was he had a “first step”, which is a lost art in the NBA.
Pleasant memories …
Pleasant memories of my youth.
See this is the …
See this is the kind of thing that makes you pull for players and teams. The struggles they go through. I love Philadelphia just for this team just like i loved the bulls for finally defeating the pistons. If it was for me being a bobcats fan I would be pulling for the Cavs now because they are struggling hard. Perhaps shag is the Cavs new Malone.
I think the sixers …
I think the sixers are a few years from returning to this level. Lou Williams will be a good starter. Anybody agree? Let me know at my site:

You got that right. …
You got that right. A team like the Bucks had no luck back then. They’d roll today, with quality players at every position.
Aside from Malone …
Aside from Malone in the middle, my lasting impression of the Sixers from that year was Cheeks and Toney coming out together almost to half-court to defend against the Lakers guards. You could tell they were going to make every pass, every dribble, every shot as difficult as possible.
And they eventually …
And they eventually did go back to the old logo, THANK GOD! I don’t even like how the shorts are now knee-high giving the players a more “ghetto” look.
The Sixers should’ve won at least 3 more championships after the ‘83 season. I didn’t understand why.
My classmates and …
My classmates and me were having a trip in Italy in 1982 and we watched an NBA regular season game on TV. It was a Lakers-Sixers, only one of us had good information about NBA. Jabbar made a great match, Erving his dunks… but Toney scored 40 points. You said the right expression: “stone cold killer”.
There is no way the …
There is no way the Sixers can keep wearing those ridiculous black uniforms. For God’s sake get back to your roots and get the old red white and blue uni’s out again…for good. You’re called the 76ers for cryin’ out loud! Do you even know what that represents anymore? Or does a hard, gangster look seem more important to you? Old logo, old uni’s. Be true to your town and it’s history in the leauge.
I always remembered …
I always remembered that when people asked Charles Barkley who the best player he ever played with or against was, he always answered with Toney’s name. It actually got a few laughing “oh, come on” responses by the person who asked him, but he always stood by his statement. That’s saying alot for a guy who not only played during Jordan’s era but was one of MJ’s boys. Toney was a stone cold killer of a shooter. Great long-forgotten talent. A real NBA star that nobody seems to remember.
Andrew Toney must …
Andrew Toney must be the most underrated shooting guard in NBA history. Without his contribution to the Sixers, Dr J wouldn’t be wearing the ring, Moses Malone wouldn’t be wearing one either. He deserves to have 22 be retired from the rafters. Pat Riley even says that he is the greatest clutch scorer he has ever seen (that was before MJ came along though).
And too bad this …
And too bad this was the last hurrah for Andrew Toney, once they lost their ace shooting guard and only really good outside shooter they were never the same. If Toney stays healthy + Charles Barkley added to the mix and things could of been much different. I know they lost some of their Fire after winning it all, but losing Tony probably had something (a lot) to do with that as well.
They should of just …
They should of just gave the Sixers a bye for the Championship and let the Bucks play the Lakers for the Consolation Championship. That was a very good Bucks team, would of been a competiteve final,
and back then top …
and back then top seeds got a first round bye…so of course just by playing more games the lakers would have the better record
I am a sixers fan, …
I am a sixers fan, but those 80-82 lakers teams were good. McAdoo and Cooper coming off the bench was tough. Magic, Kareen, Worthy, etc… too tough.
Yeah, but it’s a …
Yeah, but it’s a different league today. The Sixers, Lakers,Celtics and Bucks were deep and loaded. I can’t even watch the NBA these days.

I would say one of …
I would say one of the best. And, you are right – they played hard every night back then. When we were in gym class back then, we always played like it was Game 7 of The Finals. Also, do you realize that basketball is the only major sport without a ‘name’ for the championship event? You have the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup and then The Finals. I bet very few would realize that refers to basketball’s title event. Can I get an “Amen”?
Malone vs. Lambier, …
Malone vs. Lambier, Dr. J vs. MJ and Jones vs. Pippen – all at their primes – would have been fun to watch!
He was with Houston …
He was with Houston then and got to The Finals and lost to Bird and the Celtics. He came to Philly at the start of the 82-83 season – $2.95 M. salary. The local TV announcer boldly proclaimed(correctly)when news came that they signed Malone – “The Sixers just bought themselves a championship.” Just think how they would have done had he been there all along instead of Dawkins.
