Draft Evaluations

June 30, 2006

A few teams did good in the draft and a few others did bad. Lets start with the good. I think that Memphis did a great job, they got Rudy Gay. my second favorite college player, along with Swift and Kyle Lowry. The best thing is that they got a future star for Battier.

Another team that did good were the Cavs, I was hoping they wouldn’t get Shannon Brown so he would go to the Lakers but the Cavs got him and he should be a good fit. I don’t think he will start but he should play some quality minutes especially when Hughes hits the injured list like he does every year. They also draft Gibson in the second round.

The Nes got two good pick ups and should be a solid contender if they can pick up a swing man for the bench and another solid backup big man. The have great wing players and two pass first point guard so they are going to be a great team to watch.

I think LA got lucky to get Farmar because of some of the weird picks and decisions made by teams like Seattle, Phoenix, and NY. I was hoping Marcus Williams would fall to them, then Shannon Brown, but I Farmar should be a good fit.

Chicago did good with Thomas but I thought they would go bigger for their second pick but they got a bigger guard, makes me wonder about Ben Gordan in Chicago.

People that messed up were Portland, they made some stupid trades for players they could have waited on. I also felt the suns made some mistakes. They had to picks which could have give them solid players live Boone, Marcus Williams, Ager, etc. that could have fit in. They were just being cheap. Houston traded Rudy Gay, that was just stupid.

A lot of known underclassmen did not go undrafted, only one I know is Darius Washington. He should have stayed in school. Hopefully he can get a free agent deal somewhere.

I was also surprised Allan Ray and Mcnamara were not drafted. Ray is a solid player in my opinon I don’t know what would make him undraftable. Mcnamara is a clutch player that can shoot. Hopefully those guys will get free agent deals too.
