Do players read the same mock drafts we read?

June 6, 2006

Over the past few years I have visited www.NBADraft.net many, many times. As the draft nears, I always tend to put a big focus on the second round and underclassmen that will pull out. The reason I do that is because the info is so clear cut that a lot of these guys will be second round picks or undrafted but a lot of them stay in the draft anyway. I wonder do these people have internet access or what?

If you can go to dozens of websites and see dozens of reviews about your game and character, and if you can look in the paper and read that you have had bad workouts and you need to go back to school, why would you still come out?

Their are many like that this year Kyle Lowery, Darius Washigton,  and Daniel Gibson just to name a few. They are all Sophomores and only Lowery has a shot at making the first round. Their are a few other that can be throw in that category to. I see it done every year I just wish guys would be patient especially after seeing so many people come out to early like Omar Cook.

I guess the answer is all about hope. You have to realize that most players who declare for the draft come from poor families and basketball is their chance to earn a living. The draft gives them that hope so even if there’s a chance that they won’t be taken, there’s still that small chance that they will. The draft opens that oppurtunity for them to showcase their talent and maybe prove to be great 2nd rounders like Arenas and Ginobili or even just solid role players like Kyle Korver.

It’s easy to say “that guy should have stayed in college” when you’re judging using hind sight, but when you’re in the position of these players who are eager to earn money to support their family then going to the NBA even with that slim chance if making seems like a worthy option.

I wrote something related to this in this post. I hope you like it.

The thing I think about when it come to the draft is something Shaq said, he said if you have been poor for 21 years another year won’t hurt if it can put you in a good position for life.

Got something to say?
