Foye Standing Out In Summer League Play
July 11, 2006
The Summer leagues started a week ago and some players are flourishing while others haven’t even showed up. Foye is one player that has been impressive leading many to believe he will be ROY. Other that have player solid include Steve Novak although he need to get stronger before the real season starts. Shannon Brown has also played solid.
2 stars Amare and Artest are playing in the summer league. Amare has played well but I have read he is not as agreesive going to the hole as he was. For a person that had that type of injury he had that is expected.
Draft Evaluations
June 30, 2006
A few teams did good in the draft and a few others did bad. Lets start with the good. I think that Memphis did a great job, they got Rudy Gay. my second favorite college player, along with Swift and Kyle Lowry. The best thing is that they got a future star for Battier.
Another team that did good were the Cavs, I was hoping they wouldn’t get Shannon Brown so he would go to the Lakers but the Cavs got him and he should be a good fit. I don’t think he will start but he should play some quality minutes especially when Hughes hits the injured list like he does every year. They also draft Gibson in the second round.
The Nes got two good pick ups and should be a solid contender if they can pick up a swing man for the bench and another solid backup big man. The have great wing players and two pass first point guard so they are going to be a great team to watch.
I think LA got lucky to get Farmar because of some of the weird picks and decisions made by teams like Seattle, Phoenix, and NY. I was hoping Marcus Williams would fall to them, then Shannon Brown, but I Farmar should be a good fit.
Chicago did good with Thomas but I thought they would go bigger for their second pick but they got a bigger guard, makes me wonder about Ben Gordan in Chicago.
People that messed up were Portland, they made some stupid trades for players they could have waited on. I also felt the suns made some mistakes. They had to picks which could have give them solid players live Boone, Marcus Williams, Ager, etc. that could have fit in. They were just being cheap. Houston traded Rudy Gay, that was just stupid.
A lot of known underclassmen did not go undrafted, only one I know is Darius Washington. He should have stayed in school. Hopefully he can get a free agent deal somewhere.
I was also surprised Allan Ray and Mcnamara were not drafted. Ray is a solid player in my opinon I don’t know what would make him undraftable. Mcnamara is a clutch player that can shoot. Hopefully those guys will get free agent deals too.
Star Trades
June 28, 2006
The last few weeks I have read about a lot of trade rumors but this is one of the first times I have seen so many stars involved. Players like Iverson, Garnett, Marion, and other are involved in all types of rumors leading up to the draft. Even though many of these trades may never happen it is still fun to read about them.
I am most interested in what the Bucks are doing, because I live in Milwaukee, and what the lakers are doing because they are my favorite team. Milwaukee is shopping Magloire along with Mo Williams. I hope they trade TJ Ford rather than Mo Williams, who is the buck second best player.
As far as the Lakers go the seem to be trying to hold on to most of the key guys from last year. I read about them trading Odom for Chandler and the Bulls number 2 pick but that rumor is dead.
Some other interesting things are Iverson to Boston which would mean he and pierce would be teaming up. Shawn Marion is being rumored to go to the Bulls and I think he would be a great fit. I really don’t know what will happen but a few things will be more clear at the end of the night.
NBA Withdrawls
June 25, 2006
As with every NBA Draft a bunch of players that have no shot of getting drafted enter. Also every year some of them are smart enough to realize they better go back to school. Its fine when some players like, Akbar Abdul-Ahad want to get their name out their but to stay in is just stupid.
Some players that most people know that have decided to go back include, Mustafa Shakur, Arron Affalo, Aaron Gray, and Coby Karl. Some players that are going to wish they had went back to school will be Darius Washington, PJ Tucker, as well as a few unknowns like Matt Mitchell. Even though these guys have the option of returning to school if they don’t get drafted, when their eligibility is over they can’t get into the league unless they are signed as a free agent, which will be hard.
Jordan’s back, who will he pick in the draft?
June 22, 2006
Jordan is back in the NBA working for the Bobcats. Jordan is the man that will be selecting the Bobcats draft pick. I am curious as to who he will pick and what effect he will have on the player. The reason is because he selected Kwame Brown and then went on to destroy his confidence to a point where he had to be traded to another city before he could play well.
It is not the same situation as before because Jordan may not be around the new pick as much as he was around Kwame but when his is around the new pick I wonder if he will be just as hard on him.
I hear he is most interested in Morrison and Gay. He like Morrison’s heart but doesn’t think he is athletic. He likes Gay’s game but doesn’t think he is aggresive enough. Sounds like for the type of person Jordan is, Morrison would be the pick, if he is available. Guess we will see on draft night.
Will JJ Redick’s DWI affect his draft status?
June 15, 2006
As much as the NBA looks at the character of players I wonder if JJ Redicks DWI will affect his draft status. I have read that he has an injury which will require surgery which may have led to the incident. That seems to be a hard combination for a potential draft pick, an injury and some bad press.
He may drop a few spots more for the injury and missing workouts than anything but he will still be a first rounder and I am sure he will learn from the situation.
Skipping the predraft camp
June 11, 2006
This year, just as a lot of other year many player that are considered on the bubble chose to skip the NBA predraft camp. Player like Josh Boone, Dee Brown, Mike Gansey, Hassan Adams, and others skipped it. I understand players are concerned about showing their weaknesses in a games which is why the prefer the individual workouts, but all that does is open up the door for new players to sneak in the first round. Some guy named Louis Amundson from UNLV is now projected in the first round because of a good predraft camp. That means someone that did not go just fell out.
A player like Ryan Hollins from UCLA claimed he wasn’t going because their was no competiton. Seems to me that if he considered the competition weak he could have went in dominated everyone and got himself in the first round. I am sure a few people that went to the camp will move up while those that missed it will fall. Maybe in the future prospect will learn that the camp can be the difference between getting drafted in the first round or second round. It can also be the difference between being drafted in th second round or being drafted at all.
Boone being pressured to stay in the NBA Draft
June 7, 2006
I have read a few articles stating that Josh Boone from UConn is sign an agent and staying in the draft despite being on the bubble as a first rounder.
For people unfamiliar with the draft process, first round picks get guranteed contracts whereas second round picks have to work for their contracts. Most second round picks do not stay in the league, although some like Gilbert Arenas and Micheal Redd go on to become very good players.
Supposedly Boone’s mother wants him to stay in the draft where as he is a little shaky on going. If he really is staying in the best thing he can do is impress scouts during workouts. It is said that scouts question his love for the game and his confidence so he has to show them he has that during workouts.
Me personally I think he is good player that was just on a stacked team. I hope he stays in the first round and goes on to be a solid player.
Do players read the same mock drafts we read?
June 6, 2006
Over the past few years I have visited www.NBADraft.net many, many times. As the draft nears, I always tend to put a big focus on the second round and underclassmen that will pull out. The reason I do that is because the info is so clear cut that a lot of these guys will be second round picks or undrafted but a lot of them stay in the draft anyway. I wonder do these people have internet access or what?
If you can go to dozens of websites and see dozens of reviews about your game and character, and if you can look in the paper and read that you have had bad workouts and you need to go back to school, why would you still come out?
Their are many like that this year Kyle Lowery, Darius Washigton, and Daniel Gibson just to name a few. They are all Sophomores and only Lowery has a shot at making the first round. Their are a few other that can be throw in that category to. I see it done every year I just wish guys would be patient especially after seeing so many people come out to early like Omar Cook.
