Legit Summer League Players

July 17, 2007

A lot of people bash the NBA summer league because their is always a player or two that kills and gets peoples hope up thinking they will do it in the regular season, but they don’t. Darius Miles had a few great summer leagues in the past but he hasn’t been much of a player when he has played. Qyntel Woods got his money in the summer leagues a while back and he isn’t in the league anymore.

This year has some guys that won’t do anything in the regular season like Marcus Banks and Von Wafer but their are a few guys that I see taking their summer league game straight into the regular season.

One of those guys is Louis Williams of the 76ers. He is a Iverson type player because he is an undersized scorer. Sitting behind Iverson for a year and a half taught him a lot and now he looks ready to play some real minutes. He probably won’t start but he could be a solid sixth man and a person that plays a ton of crunch time minutes next season.

LaMarcus Aldridge is another player that should take his summer league game into the regular season. He no longer has to sit behind Zach Randolph and wait to get minutes, the PF spot is all his. With his minutes likely to hit the 35 to 40 range next season expect him to average a double-double.

Rany Foye is another guy that can’t wait for the season to start. Things were weird with the Wolves last season because the brought in Foye and signed Mike James a year after drafting Rashad McCants and they already had Troy Hudson and Jaric. With James gone, Rashad coming off a injury season, Hudson being washed up, and Jaric just being trash, Foye will be ready to take advantage of his increase in playing time by averaging at least 16ppg.

Bucks After Desmond Mason

July 16, 2007

The Milwaukee Bucks still have a little money to spend after paying Mo Williams and they are looking to spend it on former Buck Desmond Mason. Mason played two seasons with the Bucks after coming over in the Ray Allen/Gary Payton Trade. It looks like the Bucks are bringing Mason in as a replacement for Ruben Patterson. They play a very similar game although Patterson is a few inches taller.

Mo Williams Staying With The Bucks

July 14, 2007

Milwaukee Bucks guard Mo Williams has agreed to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks rather than leaving them to join the Miami Heat. The deal is reportedly worth $52 million over 6 years. Williams has a opt out clause after the 4th and 5th years.

People are already screaming he is overpaid, like they have done with every free agent signing this summer but it is a good deal. Williams is the Bucks second best player and he has improved every year.

People are also saying he is stupid to stay with the Bucks and they still won’t go anywhere. The Bucks have a good team they just need some inside scoring and they need to play better defense. I think if they stay healthy the will make the playoffs. They also still have a decent amount of cap room left to sign a few more guys.

The Heat would have improved with Williams but why take money to go play with an older team. Just think if went to the Heat on a 6 year deal, Mourning would be done in a year, Shaq probably only has 2 more years left, Walker is washed up, Kapono is gone, and Payton has been shown the door. In two years they would only have Wade and Williams and would be rebuilding while the Bucks would be becoming a force in the East.

Derek Fisher Returning To LA

July 13, 2007

The LA Lakers now have a real PG in Derek Fisher. He will sign a 3 year $14 million deal with the LA Lakers. He was released from his contract with the Jazz so that he could play in a city where his daughter could get treatment for her eye condition.

His rejoining the Lakers gives them a player that can shoot, drive, make good decisions in the clutch, and he also knows the triangle offense. Even though he is a good pick up you have to wonder whether that money could have been spent on a young free agent player. A lot of free agents prices are going down just due to supply and demand. Their are a lot of free agents and only a small amount of teams with money so a lot of guys are going to end up taking less money eventually.

Milicic Signs With The Grizzlies

July 12, 2007

The Grizzlies have signed Darko Milicic to a 3 year $21 million deal. It was said earlier this summer he was looking to get about $10 million a year. I have not really seen the guy play much so I can comment much on what he can do but this deal reminds me of the Lakers deal with Kwame Brown. The Lakers did a sign and trade for Kwame Brown which ended with Brown getting $9 million a year when people thought he still had a chance to be a solid player.

Last year was the first year Milicic actually played and I guess he showed enough potential to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Gerald Wallace Staying In Charlotte

July 11, 2007

The Bobcats have agreed to a deal with free agent Gerald Wallace. It is said to be for 6 years and $57 million. The six year is Wallace’s option and he can also earn an additional $2 million in bonuses. By retaining Wallace and adding Jason Richardson the Bobcats are looking to make the playoffs immediately.

With Wallace, Carter, Billups, and Lewis off the market their are not many big name free agents left. The biggest names left are Mo Williams and Darko Milicic.

Oden And Durant Not Looking So Great In Summer League Play

July 10, 2007

Both Greg Oden and Kevin Durant have played two summer league games and they have both failed to impress. Oden has been hacking, missing easy shots, and getting shots blocked. Durant has been missing shots, getting shots blocked, and not getting involved in anything outside of shooting.

It is not a surprise to see Oden playing the way he is because he doesn’t really have a great offensive game. Defensively he is working hard to hange shots and block shots.

I am a bit surprised at how Durant is playing. He seems to be nervous and lacking confidence. He is missing shots he would normally hit and he has not been getting many rebounds. I am sure before the end of the summer league that he will have a good 20 and 10 game but right now he needs to stop thinking and start playing.

Memphis Point Guards

July 9, 2007

Last year the Memphis Grizzlies drafted Kyle Lowry from Villanova. Unfortunately he only played 10 games before breaking his wrist and missing the entire season. This year the Grizzlies drafted Mike Conley. With all the hype around Conley, I am curious to see if he will be given the keys to the team or if their is any chance of Lowry being the starter.

In the summer league both have played well, they have also seen time on the court together. Right now Lowry is leading the team and scoring and seems to be fighting hard to make let people know that he is the better player.
