Lakers Lose Without Kobe
January 31, 2007
The Lakers lost their third straight game to the New York Knicks yesterday. They played the game without Kobe Bryant who was suspended for accidentally hitting Manu Ginoboli in the face against the Spurs on Sunday afternoon.
It sucks that he got suspended on something like that and not just for the Lakers organization but for the fans in New York. Kobe Bryant is one of the leagues star attractions and he only plays in New York once a year. It is a shame fans were not able to see him play. I know I would be pissed if I got tickets to see Kobe, Lebron, Wade, or any other star player and they got suspended the day of the game. I guess fans in New York will have to wait until next year.
Suns Lose To The Timberwolves
January 29, 2007
The Suns streak ended tonight at 17 games as they were beaten by the Timberwolves 121 to 112. Garnett went off for 44 points including 15 in the fourth. I thought that their streak would end in one of the next two games against either San Antonio or Utah but I was wrong. The Timberwolves must have been able to shut down that pick and roll in the fourth or the Suns may have just been missing.
It will be interesting to see how the next two games go, it is possible they could end the week with three straight losses.
The Suns And The Pick And Roll
January 29, 2007
The Phoenix Suns and especially get a lot of praise for how they play and the wins they have racked up and they deserve it but if you really study how they play their success is based on the simple pick and roll play. If teams can figure out how to stop the pick and roll then they can stop the Suns.
Phoenix has a lot of option when they run that play and they take advantage. On pick and rolls they force the other team to switch leaving a big guy like Amare on a little guy and a big guy guarding Steve Nash. Amare can take the little guy easily or Nash can take the big guy off the dribble easily. Those are two options. If the big guard that is now switched on to Nash try to help in the post Nash can shoot the three. If any other play lean into the middle to help in the post Nash can hit them with a pass for an open three. Hope that wasn’t too confusing.
Their success running that play is a bit shocking because they have been doing it for the last two seasons. It is also a shock more teams don’t run it. The only way a team will be able to beat the Suns is to outscore them or to stop switching on the pick and roll which is very hard to do.
Nuggets vs. Jazz Game Was A Good One
January 27, 2007
For those of you that did not see the Nuggets Jazz game yesterday you missed a go one. Iverson and Carmelo were going off as were Boozer and Deron Williams. Melo and Iverson combined for 70 of the Nuggets 112 points. The biggest thing that made the game entertaining was how Carmlo was abusing everyone they put on him. He was scoring with crossover pullups, fadeaways, and spinmoves and was coming down the court laughing and smiling because it was so easy. He gave it to Ronnie Brewer the most.
Iverson was having his way with Deron Williams but a turnover by Carmelo near the end and a horrible shot by Steve Blake lost them the game. If you have not seen the Nuggets play you better make time because they are very entertaining.
The Votes Are In
January 26, 2007
The Starters for next months All-Star game were announced yesterday. The Eastern Conference starters are Shaq, Chris Bosh, Lebron James, DWade, and Gilbert Arenas. The Western Conference starters are Yao Ming, Duncan, Garnett, Kobe, and T-Mac. Yao won’t play in the game because of injury.
If you look back at my early picks at the end of November you will see that 5 of the 10 people I thought should start are starting. Looking back at my picks I made a mistake putting Deron Williams over Nash but in my defense the Sun were not playing as good then. I also messed up picking Jermaine O neal and Tim Duncan, I should have went with Bosh and Dirk.
Overall the starting picks look interesting because the East has three 2003 first rounders starting. It is also a bit of a shock the Gilbert crept up and got voted in by the fans. He is finally getting noticed.
It will be interesting to see the reserves especially in the West with so many good forwards. Will Marion make it? Will Boozer make it? Will Carmelo make it? We will just have to wait and see.
The Suns Win 15th Straight Game
January 24, 2007
The Phoenix Suns won their 15th straight game tonight against the New York Knicks. With the way they are playing along with their upcoming schedule they may take this streak to at least 18 games. In their next 3 games they play Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Minnesota. After that they will face off against the Spurs on the road. If they get past the Spurs they will have to deal with the Jazz on the road.
It will be interesting to see how far this team can go with this streak and which team will knock them off. It will also be interesting to see which team ends up with the better western conference record, Dallas or Phoenix.
Melo and Iverson Get A Win In First Game Together
January 23, 2007
Carmelo Anthony teamed up with Allen Iverson in their first game together and they put on a show and got the win. Anthony ended up with 28 points on 25 shot attempts while Iverson had 23 points on 16 shot attempts.
Because the Nuggets won the game by 17 and the scoring was balanced people seem to think that this will be a every game occurance. Lets not forget, they were playing the Grizzles. The real tests for this team will come against the Spurs, Suns, Mavs, Lakers, and Pistons. If they can play balanced and get victories over those teams then it will be time to get excited.
Arenas And Redd, Best Players In Their Drafts
January 21, 2007
I was glancing at some of the past NBA drafts a while back and I was a bit surprised to notice that Michael Redd and Gilbert Arenas, second round picks, where the best players in their respective drafts. Redd was selected with the 43rd pick in the 2000 draft and Arenas was selected with the 31st pick in the 2001 draft.
Now both of these players are all-stars and big time NBA scorers. I knew about Redd in college because I watch a lot of Big Ten games and I was surprised to see him fall that far but I was happy that the Bucks got him. It is really funny to look back and see that guys like Keyon Dooling and Etan Thomas got picked before him.
Arenas I did not know much about him in college but I saw him play a bit in his second season and I was impressed. I became a fan of his after hearing the story of why he wears number zero. It is funny guys like Brian Scalabrine and Steven Hunter got picked before him.
It is always good to see guys come back from second round status to become stars and make big money.
New Poll Feature
January 18, 2007
I added a new feature to the blog that allows me to create polls for people to participate in. I plan on doing a new poll every few days so I can see what other fans feel about certain things.Â
